Any study of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo should take into account the two contexts of Spanish Caesaropapism in Sicily, namely a Church established by Habsburg rulers with the monarch at its head, and international relationships between the Spanish Monarchy, France, and the Holy See. This chapel, situated right at the heart of the Royal Palace – seat of both the Viceroy and the tribunals of the Kingdom – was actually a sort of miniature cathedral for the Spanish king-pope (as ecclesiastical patron and papal legate), and the fact that it was dedicated to Saint Peter clearly evoked the papal Basilica of the same name in Rome. Nei mosaici che decorano le chiese costruite in Sicilia nel XII dai re normanni compaiono rappresentazioni di edifici. Tali rappresentazioni, come frequentemente accade in epoca pre-rinascimentale, condensano, per accostamento, diverse ‘viste’ dello stesso edificio. La presenza negli edifici normanni di pavimenti e manufatti lignei decorati secondo pattern geometrici, ha suggerito la ricerca di analoghi tracciati nei rivestimenti musivi. The candelabrum for the Easter candle in the Palatine Chapel in Palermo is in many ways one of the emblematic examples of Norman sculpture in Sicily, to be placed in the context of a broader Mediterranean current, classicistic and highly expressive, which includes contemporary productions of Tuscany, Emilia, Provence, Ile-de-France, Roussillon and Languedoc, Catalonia, up to the Holy Land of the Crusaders.
